U.N. special envoy Terje Roed-Larsen vowed that the world body would always seek to help Lebanon through diplomatic means to consolidate its sovereignty but urged Beirut for more action to solve its problems.
"I understand the sensitive situation that Lebanon is going through," Roed-Larsen, who is tasked with overseeing the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1559, said during talks with MP Nadim Gemayel, who is currently in New York.
The Lebanese government should try to solve its problems in order to receive "the international community's help in consolidating its sovereignty so that the Lebanese could enjoy security and stability," the diplomat said.
"The United Nations will always seek to help Lebanon through diplomatic channels to consolidate its sovereignty, security and independence," Roed-Larsen stressed.
In his turn, Gemayel discussed with Roed-Larsen during the 50-minute talks the implementation of the remaining clauses of 1559, demarcation of the Syrian-Lebanese border and ending the alleged smuggling of arms to Hizbullah.
