STL Judges Discuss Amendments to Rules of Procedure and Evidence

Special Tribunal for Lebanon Judges are meeting on Wednesday and Thursday to discuss amendments to the court's Rules of Procedure and Evidence, the STL said.
"The Judges of the STL are meeting today and tomorrow to discuss a number of proposed amendments to the Rules of Procedure and Evidence, as well as other issues relating to the work of the Tribunal," the STL said in a terse statement.

Three Australian men convicted of terrorism-related offences in Lebanon a little more than a year ago are to have their appeals heard in the military court in Beirut in April, according to the latest advice given to the federal government.
Hussein El Omar, Ibrahim Sabouh and Omar El Hadba are out on bail pending the hearing. A fourth Australian, Hussein Sabbagh, has been convicted in absentia by a Lebanese court and his whereabouts are unknown, a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokeswoman said.

A Christian-Muslim spiritual summit at the Maronite Archbishopric of Beirut on Tuesday is aimed at keeping contact between the two religions, Maronite Archbishop of Beirut Boulos Matar said.
Matar told Voice of Lebanon radio station (93.3) ahead of the summit that the meeting and a lunch are on the occasion of Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi's visit to Beirut parishes and to hold consultative talks.

Two Lebanese Detained on Charges of Smuggling Weapons to Syria

Lebanese authorities detained on Tuesday two Lebanese nationals on charges of smuggling weapons into Syria through the eastern border town of Arsal.
Military Examining Magistrate Imad al-Zain questioned Wael F. and Bahaa F., according to the National News Agency.
The examining magistrate issued arrest warrants against them on charges of smuggling weapons to Syria, the NNA reported.

STL Spokesman Says Trials in Absentia Expected to Begin End of 2012

Special Tribunal for Lebanon spokesman Marten Youssef expected the trials in absentia to kick off at the end of 2012, according to al-Liwaa newspaper on Monday.
Youssef revealed that the date will be set in April by Pre-Trial Judge Daniel Fransen, urging the four suspects to appear before the court.

دخل أربعة شبان المقهى. يتناولون الغداء ويحتسون الشاي مع بعض الحلويات. يطلبون الفاتورة. الحساب 100 ألف ليرة لبنانية. يتوجهون الى صندوق المحاسبة ثم يعلو الصراخ. الشبان ينهالون بالضرب على الموظف،يستولون على 100 ألف ليرة بعد ان يحطموا زجاج المقهى ثم يغادرون من دون ان يعترضهم احد!.
هذا المشهد في قلب الضاحية الجنوبية، وتحديداً على اوتوستراد السيد هادي نصرالله (حارة حريك)، ووفق أصحاب محل بالقرب من المقهى المذكور، ان ما يجري في الضاحية يفوق بكثير ما شهده ذلك المقهى.

The United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Derek Plumbly, arrived in Beirut on Saturday to officially take up his new responsibilities, his office said in a press release. U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon appointed Plumbly, a British diplomat, as his Special Coordinator last month, succeeding Michael Williams of the United Kingdom. "In fulfilling his functions, the Special Coordinator for Lebanon is the Secretary-General's representative to the Lebanese government, all political parties and the diplomatic community based in the country," the statement said.

Bourj Hammoud, Lebanon (CNN) -- Film director Nigol Bezjian was born in Syria, raised in Lebanon and studied in the United States, but nowhere does he feel more at home than in Little Armenia. Little Armenia is the vibrant Bourj Hammoud neighborhood of Beirut. Bourj Hammoud was developed mainly in the 1930s by Armenian refugees who arrived in Beirut after massacres of Armenians in 1915 and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Armenians and many historians refer to the massacres as genocide, but Turkey has always denied there was a genocide of the Armenian population.

This miraculous icon had been part of the collection of the Monastery of Valaam, on the Island of Lake Ladoga, located across from the city of Saint Petersburg in Russia. Francois Bassil: Lebanon may suffer Greece’s fate

A leading Lebanese banker fears a Greek economic scenario in Lebanon this year if the government fails to take immediate action to reduce the budget deficit, cut waste and implement broad reforms.
"If the debt continues to rise in the same high tempo then I won't be surprised if Lebanon experiences the same scenario in Greece, whose economy is in total shambles," Francois Bassil, Chairman of Byblos Bank, one the three largest banks in the country, told The Daily Star in an exclusive interview Thursday.

في تطوّر سياسيّ لافت طلب رئيس الحكومة نجيب ميقاتي من رئيس الجمهورية ميشال سليمان أن يرفع جلسة مجلس الوزراء لعدم الإفساح في المجال أمام وزراء «التغيير والإصلاح» بالانسحاب من الجلسة وتطيير النصاب على خلفية موضوع التعيينات.وقد جاء موقف ميقاتي ليطرح أكثر من تساؤل، خصوصاً أنه أعقب مواجهة بين سليمان وباسيل في جلسة مجلس الوزراء أول من أمس، وتزامن مع هجمة جنبلاطية على وزراء النائب ميشال عون بالجملة، فيما الرئيس نبيه برّي لم يوفّرهم بدوره من انتقاداته. وهذا التطوّر إن دلّ على شيء فعلى نيّة التحالف الرباعي أو "التكتل الوسطي" الذي يضمّ سليمان وبرّي وميقاتي وجنبلاط مواجهة الحالة العونيّة غير عابئين بالغطاء الذي يوفّره "حزب الله" لهذه الحالة.

عقدت الهيئة الإدارية لمصلحة الأساتذة الجامعيين في القوات اللبنانية إجتماعاً برئاسة الدكتور جورج سعادة، تداولت فيه مختلف شؤون الساعة في ما يجري في الجامعة لجهة سلسلة الرتب والرواتب ونظام L.M.D المطبق فيها حديثاً. وكذلك لمناسبة قرب تعيين المدراء والعمداء، وتفريغ أساتذة متعاقدين.

كما بحثت الهيئة بضرورة التحرك للحث على إنشاء مجمعات جامعية للجامعة اللبنانية في بيروت وسائر المناطق ولا سيما في منطقة جبل لبنان الشمالي. وتوقفت عند مسألة كتاب التاريخ الموحد وما يدور حوله من مناقشات.
